NC coffee shops, NC music, NC events

This is a new blog devoted to NC coffee shops, NC music and NC events. I have wanted to do this for years. I have some friends that own coffee shops in NC and even Mukilteo WA. I am doing this out of my love of coffee shops and music. North Carolina has a strong tradition of music that ranges from Bach to bluegrass. Many people think of old time and bluegrass music when they think of North Carolina. However, early Moravian and German settlers brought organs and the music of Bach and other classical musicians. That classical tradition is being carried forward today by the likes of the NC school of the arts, the UNCG music department, the Eastern Music Festival and symphonies and schools throughout the state. Some of the best blues I have ever heard as well as bluegrass was in downtown Greensboro NC, at the Green Bean Coffee shop. Some of the old time blues singers and instrumentalists got their start or played in NC.

Well to make a long story short, there are a lot of great musicians in NC. Many of them play in coffee shops to small crowds. I have heard some phenomenal music played to too few people. The Dave Fox Trio in Greensboro is another good example. They often play jazz at Tate Street Coffee in Greensboro, but their quality of music deserves more listeners.

This blog is devoted to sharing this wealth of music with the world and bringing more people out to hear it. As popular as coffee shops are today, I don’t get it. Maybe this blog can get the word out to more people. You can enjoy some of the best music in the world for the price of a cup of coffee. If you own or manage a coffee shop, if you have music to offer or want to start some jam sessions, post a comment on this blog. I will begin posting music offerings I know of and we will go from there.

Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 7:00 PM we will host a bluegrass jam in Charlotte NC. The location for the bluegrass jam will be Dilworth Coffee Shop in Quail Corners Shopping Center on Park Road. This is not just any bluegrass jam. John Werner, a bass player and bluegrass musician from Australia will be in town and will jam with us. John is a member of The Strzelecki Stringbusters, a bluegrass band. Whether you play bluegrass or old time music, you would like to learn to play, you sing or just want to listen, join us on Thursday, April 3. A good time will be had by all.
