We had a great jam session at Dilworth Coffee Shop in Quail Corners Shopping Center, last night, Thursday, April 3, 2008. John Werner and his wife, from Australia joined us. John plays in a bluegrass band in Australia and his wife plays in an Irish music band. We had a good mix of people and instruments. All had a good time. The seeds of future bluegrass and old time music jam sessions have been planted. We will be inviting more musicians and singers to join us. Keep checking back. I will provide details about upcoming jam sessions. Please tell your friends.

I spoke to John on the phone yesterday afternoon. He was ecstatic. He had been in bluegrass heaven. He took part in jam sessions at Fort Mill in NC and in multiple sessions in SW virginia. People welcomed them both and showed the hospitality and friendliness that I treasure about this area of the country. Well, enough of me speaking for John. He promises to provide a writeup when they get back to Australia.

One of the people that came to listen to the music searched the internet and found the jam session on this blog. It gives me great satisfaction to have been a part of this.

Emily, thanks again for bringing the vintage bass that John played and for playing some incredible old time fiddle music. Michael, thanks for helping organize the jam session and thanks to all who came and made it a memorable event.

Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 7:00 PM we will host a bluegrass jam in Charlotte NC. The location for the bluegrass jam will be Dilworth Coffee Shop in Quail Corners Shopping Center on Park Road. This is not just any bluegrass jam. John Werner, a bass player and bluegrass musician from Australia will be in town and will jam with us. John is a member of The Strzelecki Stringbusters, a bluegrass band. Whether you play bluegrass or old time music, you would like to learn to play, you sing or just want to listen, join us on Thursday, April 3. A good time will be had by all.

The Green River Boys from western North Carolina started as a group by getting together on Tuesday nights at the home of Charles Jones.Jones who was the original banjo player of the group along with Fred Lyons, bass-man Ireland Brown and CA Morgan played their instruments, while Bruce Cole and later James coot McDowell sang those old time gospel songs in late 1999 towards the end of the year.

In December 1999 the green river boys were invited to perform at the Saluda family restaurant (now shaffers grill) in Saluda, NC. This is a gig that we have continued every other weekend since, to the delight of local residents and travelers and truckers passing through or visiting the Carolinas.

The Green River Boys have shared the stage with many nationally know gospel and bluegrass groups including The Primitive qt, The Jody Brown Indian family, Standing Tall, Mike Upright, Naomi and the Sego’s, The Singing Echoes, The Hoskins family, The Hayes family, The Redeemed, The Melodyaires, The Jimmy Justice family, and Furman Boyce and Harmony Express ,the Jason Camp familyAND THE PRINCIPLES.

I just discovered Zakk’s Coffeehouse in Murfreesboro NC. I have not been there so I would like some feedback. They apparently have free WIFI and a rock music venue with tickets available for purchase.

Pete at Dilworth Coffee Shop in Quail Corners Shopping Center has offered his coffee shop for a bluegrass jam. John Werner, an Australian bass player in a bluegrass band, is visiting Charlotte and NC later in March and April 2008. John wants to soak up the bluegrass experience in NC and participate in some jam sessions. He is also hoping someone will let him play their upright bass. I have sent this information to The High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association, The Charlotte Folk Society and to some local bluegrass musicians. If you have any interest in a bluegrass jam at Dilworth Coffee Shop, let me know.

Aussie bluegrass musician coming to Charlotte, seeks jam sessions, upright bass, let’s show NC hospitality

I received a post from a musician in Australia who is visiting Charlotte and North Carolina soon. He has played a lot of different music but has embraced bluegrass music and wants to experience bluegrass music in NC. He is a bass player and will not be bringing his bass from Australia. I am going to provide some jam session suggestions, but would love to hear from bluegrass musicians. Also, if someone out there has a bass he could play at a jam session that would be great. Let’s show him some NC hospitality. The Australians have stood by us and fought side by side with us for years. Here is the email he sent:

We fly in on March 27th, and will be touring around Western NC & TN until April 1st. …….. and we then fly out on April 8th. So I’ll have a bit of free time on my hands….

I’m a bassist who 3 years ago moved over to the upright after 25yrs as an electric player (you name it, I’ve played). Some friends turned me onto folk, and from there I found my way back to my country roots. Bluegrass is my staple diet now, and by getting along to the many great session available around Australia I’ve been fortunate to play with, and learn from, some of the best pickers here.

I won’t be able to take my bass for obvious reasons, and am hoping that in the fine bluegrass tradition I may be offered the opportunity to borrow one, if only for a few tunes. To be able to jam with locals at the ‘coal face’ would make the trip worthwhile.

I’ve attached a pic of one of the bands I play with…..a great bunch of blokes called The Strzelecki Stringbusters, named after the mountain range we all live in here in regional Victoria (waaaay down south). Not all 14 members are shown here, but the shot captures what we (and the genre) are all about. Whilst not strictly bluegrass, we’re at the forefront in our region (Gippsland) of showing folks another way to interact musically, and support a wide variety of community-based projects. As they say, there’s a lot of work for a band that doesn’t charge any money!

Friends of Bluegrass, bluegrass concert series, Holly Springs, NC, March, May, June, July 2008

I just received this from Friends of Bluegrass. Friends of Bluegrass is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 dedicated to the preservation, education, and promotion of bluegrass in the Holly Springs, NC and surrounding areas.

Friends of Bluegrass is sponsoring a bluegrass concert series at the new Holly Springs Cultural Center located in downtown Holly Springs. The center has a state-of-the-art, 200 seat theater that provides an intimate setting and excellent sound quality that is perfect for listening to bluegrass music. It is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the best places to hear and play bluegrass music in the area.

I just wanted to let you know that Mark Stuart (of Mark Stuart / Stacey Earle (Stacey is Steve Earle’s sister) will be performing at The Garage on March 8. The opening act, The Bowmans , start at 8:00 pm and then Mark goes on at approximately 9 pm. It’s acoustic music and should be quite nice. I hope to see you all there!

Mark Stuart is a veteran artist of the Folk/Americana music circuit. As a songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist he has toured extensively all over the USA, Canada and Europe. Few genres of Americana are left out of his performances (he touches upon blues, rock, folk, country and more).

Much of his time in the last decade has been devoted to a husband-wife duo, “Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart” but, he returns to his roots as a solo artist in 2008 for a sizeable portion of the year. In past years, Stuart lent his musical hands to other artists in the studio and on tour. Many of these fellow performers (Steve Forbert, Freddy Fender, Steve Earle, Jonnell Mosser) are well-known on the same “roots music” circuit.

Celebrated festivals (Cambridge Folk Festival, Kate Wolf Festival, Kerrville, Merlefest, etc.) and radio shows (Whad’Ya Know?, Woodsongs, Mountain Stage, etc.) have been host to Mark’s performances and he has surfaced as an instructor at many songwriting schools and guitar clinics.

A Nashville native, Mark Stuart has recorded a new CD titled, “Left of Nashville”, in which he plays all instruments and wrote all the songs.
