EIGHTwentythree (named for the first time they ever played together–8/23/01) will be performing original compositions from their new CD, The Blessing Of The Strings, due out in May. The group consists of songwriter Greg Eldred on lead vocals and guitar, Keith Carroll on vocals and acoustic (upright) bass, and composer Jeff Wiseman on vocals and banjo. Author John Santa also writes songs for the quartet. Their music draws on many sources from the traditional sounds of Bill Monroe to the pop stylings of the Beatles. Starbucks, corporate spin, nationwide closings, support local coffee shops

Let me be honest. I do not like Starbucks coffee. I also do not like the corporate aspect of Starbucks. In fairness to Starbucks, apparently they treat their employees well. I believe their coffee is overbrewed. When I buy their coffee beans, it always tastes better than the coffee they brew.

In regard to their corporate attitude toward customers. For years they have arrogantly charged customers for wireless access when many coffee shops and restaurants around them offer wireless access as a service to the customers. Now Starbucks has decided to close all stores on February 26 from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. Their excuse is to provide better service and quality to their customers. Well what have they been doing for years. Are they just now figuring it out? I can see George Orwell turning over in his grave again. It sounds like doublespeak to me. It also has the appearance of the government “looking out for me.” If you value your customers, you don’t shut down when they need your service.

Starbucks customers, use this as an opportunity to support a local small business. Odds are, the coffee at the other coffee shops is better. It has to be. So, on February 26, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, visit a local small business coffee shop.

First, please forgive the solicitation, but this may be a nice option for you and your family while helping a few kids out too!

Grimsley High School Orchestra is planning a trip to New York this April. They have been raising money to fund their way for musical enrichment opportunities…as well as some fun! While many of the students’ parents are helping to pay for their trip, there are a number of kids whose families have no financial means to support them in their efforts. Fundraising also becomes problematic for some students because people in their neighborhoods may also be struggling and unable to help support them with fundraising sales or donations.

On February 21st…a Thursday…Carrabba’s Italian Grill is DONATING  all the food for a dinner. The menu is Caesar Salad, Chicken Marsala Penne Pomodoro, and desserts and drinks will be provided by the orchestra boosters. We would love for you to join us at either 5:30 PM or again at 6:15 Pm for dinner in the “lovely but quaint” Grimsley High Cafeteria and enjoy music provided by the Grimsley Repertory Orchestra, followed by a Combined Music Department Concert in the auditorium.

The other option is to order tickets for carry out dinners for your family and stop by between 5:30 and 6:30 to pick them up. It will be necessary to go through the line as dinners will be assembled as you come to claim them.

The line, I am assures will move quickly and the music will be relaxing at the end of you work day and the “kitchen staff” in your home will get a well deserved night off!

The cost of the meals are only $7.00! This is all donated to the students for their trip expenses…PROVIDED WE SELL A CERTAIN NUMBER OF TICKETS!!! OTHERWISE, CARRABBA’S WILL CHARGE US A FEE FOR CATERING!!! So please consider ordering dinner to help the kids if you can! Barnes & Noble is my favorite big box bookstore. They have a great selection of books, a coffee shop sitting area and wireless access. However, the wireless access is not free. This is a message from me and other long time customers. What were you thinking!! You can go most anywhere in Greensboro or anywhere else in the state of North Carolina and get free wireless access. To not provide this is to insult your customers. Ok, I made my point.

Barnes & Noble hosts many book signings and the store in Friendly Center in Greensboro NC is hosting a book signing for NC artist and author Susan Barringer Wells (aka Susan Vaughan Wells), Friday, February 15, 2008 at 7:00 PM. Susan has written a new book, “A Game Called Salisbury”, about the murder of the Lyerly Family in Salisbury NC over 100 years ago. Susan also explores and reveals attitudes on race in NC and the US. Sales of the book have exceeded expectations and Susan has held numerous book signings in NC.

Charlotte Folk Society, live music, jam sessions, NC music

I have known about the Charlotte Folk Society for many years. As a member of the High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association in Greensboro NC, I would see their events listed on our calendar of events. I have been meaning to attend a jam session in Charlotte, but have been too busy. That is going to change soon. The Charlotte Folk Society has a long tradition of promoting folk, old time, bluegrass and other music. They also have a great website. Here is an excerpt from their website:

“Banjo picker Wayne Erbsen, on a North Carolina Arts Council visiting artist residency in Charlotte, NC, must have wondered whether he was barking up the wrong tree, playing old-time stringband music amid the skyscrapers and suburban sprawl of the biggest city in the Carolinas.

But it wasn’t long before he met up with homegrown guitarist/square dancer Marilyn Meacham Price, who loved the music as much as he did. With Wayne’s encouragement, Marilyn started presenting traditional music events. In 1982 she sent out a call to those who shared her love of traditional music. The result became the Charlotte Folk Society.

Today CFS celebrates its 25th anniversary, looking back on a quarter century of promoting enjoyment and preservation of traditional and contemporary folk music, dance, crafts, and lore in the piedmont Carolinas. Eastern Music Festival, ultimate classical music jam session

If you love classical music or any music and you can arrange to be in Greensboro NC between June 28 and August 2, go by Guilford College or places like Tate Street Coffee. Hundreds of the best and brightest students from all over the country, as well as professional musicians in many disciplines are in town for The Eastern Music Festival. “The Eastern Music Festival and School is one of this country’s foremost training programs for aspiring young orchestral and piano students between the ages of 14 and 20, presented within the nationally known summer music festival.

For over 45 years, the central focus of the Eastern Music Festival and School has remained the needs of the pre-professional student. The School at EMF limits enrollment to no more than 200 students, making this unique program “up close and personal,” ensuring access to faculty, visiting artists and artistic staff, and creating an extremely nurturing and friendly environment.

EMF challenges you to discover your best, and learn how to push beyond. NC bluegrass, old time music, jam sessions, High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association

I have been a member of the High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association for several years. This is a fairly large group of talented bluegrass and old time musicians and musicians of other types of music. I have missed the regular jam sessions in Greensboro NC since I am in Charlotte most of the time. There are many fine people in the group and they welcome newcomers and novices. Sometimes they have jam sessions in coffee shops. Below is the latest schedule of bluegrass jam sessions and performances in the area. I plan to make this a regular post and will set up a page for it.

 Fiddle & Bow Returns to the Airwaves!
Sonny Thomas, who hosted the Fiddle & Bow Show from 1982 through 1998, will be returning to WFDD-FM on February 23rd with a new radio show on the station’s third digital channel, WFDD HD 3.  The show will air on HD radio and from the WFDD website on Saturday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 PM.  HD radio is supposedly the wave of the future for radio.  It offers CD quality sound and other feaures which will make radio listening a greater pleasure.  The show will be called “Saturday Night Roots” and will feature folk/acoustic music from around the world.  Sonny welcomes suggestions and requests.  You can reach him at sothom@aol.com.

Charlotte NC music, coffee shops, jam sessions

I have been living in Charlotte for over a year now. I have been in many areas of the city, visited many coffee shops and attended several music venues. I really like the Neighborhood Theatre in NODA, one of my favorite areas of Charlotte. One area I have been disappointed in is small venue live music and varieties of music. Specifically, coffee shop or small cafes with live music. I’ve got to tell you Charlotteans, you have been one upped by Greensboro again. Greensboro has a larger coliseum and gets better college basketball events. Greensboro had the downtown baseball stadium first with record attendance. And guess what, Greensboro has a better and more diversified music scene, especially in the coffee shop or small cafe venue. So, I am issueing a challenge to Charlotte residents.  Would you attend live coffee shop music events? Think about it. This is a no brainer. For the price of a cup of coffee, you can listen to top notch entertainment. Some of these people, like Hootie and the Blowfish, played to small audiences in the Carolinas when they were getting started. We have a lot of musical talent around Charlotte and in North Carolina. Let me know what you think. Many coffee shop owners want to provide live music but in the past advertising was too expensive. Well, the internet fixes that. Perhaps you are looking for a jam session site. Let me know. I will try to hook you up with a location. Also, we need a variety of music, including jazz, blues, classical, celtic, old time, bluegrass as well as rock. Let’s see if Charlotte has a pulse and is not one of the worst places to live.

Tate Street Coffee Shop, in Greensboro NC, still reigns as my favorite coffee shop in the US. In addition to having great coffee, atmosphere, superb service and a wide array of interesting patrons, Tate Street Coffee has a long tradition of being a music venue. One of my long time favorites is Dave Fox and his associates. They are some of the most talented musicians anywhere and the jazz they play is world class. The coffee shop is adjacent to UNCG, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. This helps to make Tate Street Coffee a music mecca for the area. A wide variety of musicians play jazz, blues, rock, classical, celtic, old time and bluegrass at Tate Street. A list of current music offerings is posted on a board inside the coffee shop.
